We have updated our operating system and can't get CAPE to work anymore. What's wrong?
Most likely the problem is that the software version you have is no longer compatible with your new platform and you will need to upgrade WebCAPE. This will cost between $75 to $425 depending on the options you select. Navigate to a WebCAPE Site License Upgrade from Software of the language(s) of your choice and add them to your cart. Website programming will guide you through questions that will tailor your access to the online exams.

How long will it take to set up our access to WebCAPE?
That will mostly be up to you:
1. Order online at http://creativeworks.byu.edu/htrsc
2. Select payment method: either a printed invoice you can send to your purchasing department or online by credit card
3. About one week after we receive payment, your access will be set up.
[FAQ]

What about cutoff scores?
Our programmer will contact you for your cutoff scores when he starts setting up your access. If you don't have these numbers at the outset, we can begin with ours and you can calibrate your own scores by testing your current students. In the case of the purchase of a bulk option license you will be given a 30 day grace period before the counter is initiated. Please put the beginning and ending dates during which you wish to run your calibrations in the comment field.
[FAQ]

Can we add our own questions to the registration page surveys?
Only the long survey can include tailored programming.
[FAQ]

How long is the site license valid?
A site license is valid for as long as you want to use it or we keep the program running. We have used CAPE in one form or another to test our own students since 1990 and we have no plans to discontinue it's use anytime in the future.
[FAQ]

What is lag time between a student taking the online exam the reporting of the results?
Exam results are posted to the management database as soon as the student finishes the exam. The management database can be found at http://webcaperesult.byuhtrsc.org. The account name and password for this site was sent to the person who ordered WebCAPE for your school. Please contact this person for the appropriate login information.
[FAQ]

How can I get a cost estimate for your software?
You may start an order on our site and print out the shopping cart list in lieu of such an estimate. Submitting the order as the final step will then allow you to either print out a numbered invoice that you may submit to your purchasing department for payment or pay online with a credit card.
[FAQ]

Can I test WebCAPE before purchasing?
Most certainly! Email us for login information.
[FAQ]

Do you have statistics to verify the validity of your language tests?
The validity correlation coefficients for the tests were calculated using the MAPS tests from ETS. They are as follows:

Spanish = .91
French = .80
German = .89
Russian = .86

The reliability (test-retest) coefficients as follows:

Spanish = .86
French = .76
German = .80
Russian = .96
[FAQ]

How many questions are in each language test and how are the scores calculated?
The CAPE tests are computer adaptive, reliant on the skill level of the students; therefore, test scores are variable to accurately assess their language ability. So scores will not be directly based on the number of questions asked and correctly answered.

WebCAPE questions are adaptive, meaning that the next question that a student is asked depends on his/her answer to the previous one. This results in a variable set of questions tailored to each student's ability. Our program asks enough questions to solidly estimate a student's ability and then produce a raw placement score ranging from 0 to 600+. If a student's ability is above the range of the test, the placement scores could range as high as 700-800, but the standard error on these values would be quite high.

The raw scores are then assigned cutoffs by test administrators in order to place students in the appropriate class. Obviously these cutoffs can vary from school to school and so calibration is strongly recommended. Below are BYU's cutoffs for the first 4 semesters of Spanish:

Spanish 101: 0 - 295
Spanish 102: 296-355
Spanish 201: 356-439
Spanish 202: 440 and up
[FAQ]

Is the WebCAPE fee a one-time or annual payment?
The WebCAPE Site License fee is a one-time payment, as are the setup fees. However, there is an annual support fee of $75 per language. The WebCAPE Bulk Option fee is based on the number of tests ordered; as tests run out, new tests will need to be purchased.
[FAQ]

Can our school link WebCAPE scores directly to our online registration?
There are a couple of different ways to get WebCAPE scores pulled into your system, but it will require a competent programmer familiar with server-side
web technology and databases on your end. If you can get someone with these qualifications to explain what is wanted, we can try to work out an arrangement for your network.
[FAQ]

How do we calibrate WebCAPE to better suit our school?
For calibration information see http://webcape.byuhtrsc.org/nwccalibrate.html.
[FAQ]

Is student information transferred over the internet secure?
The transfer of survey information over the Internet is not secure, and could be intercepted by a third party without our knowledge. The information from the form is stored in the database in an encrypted configuration (all fields are in one, big block), but such encryption is fairly easy to break should the data be compromised. (An event which is also difficult to detect or prevent.) For this reason, the Social Security Administration has requested that institutions stop using social security numbers for identity purposes. We recommend you do not ask for a social security number on your registration page. WebCAPE does not take responsibility for a school's failure to comply with the Social Security Administration request.
