This new hymnal provides alternate tunes for familiar hymn texts. All the texts have been taken from the official 1985 hymnbook of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Hymns), with at least one new musical setting for every text in that book. Our goal is to combine words and music in a way that enhances the original message of the hymn text, putting the meaning of that text in a whole new light by altering the music’s character. We have also sought out some of the best existing hymn tunes. For this collection, we have chosen a wide variety of tunes with sources ranging from plainchant, chorales, and classical music to folk hymns, gospel songs, and modern hymn settings.
These new settings are particularly appropriate for church choirs and for those singing vocal solos in church. This collection compiles all the new settings into one coil-bound book that will be particularly useful for accompanists and directors. The hymns in the collection have been organized in alphabetical order, making it easy to find new settings for a particular hymn. For all of the hymns and texts that are in the public domain, we have provided online recordings and scores at singanewsong.org/hymnbook. These resources can be freely shared online and can be downloaded and printed out for choir members. We also encourage the creation of new hymn arrangements based on the settings in this collection. Our hope is that these settings will help you to express sacred ideas in new and enlightening ways, sharing familiar messages while "singing a new song to the Lord."
